Environmental Policy
Mayo Hardware embraces the principle of sustainability, wherein the development and growth in its business needs meets the needs of the present, without compromising the welfare of future generations.
We are committed to conducting our operations in a manner which reduces environmental risk and adverse effects on the environment in which we operate. We acknowledge the need to incorporate environmentally sound practices into our core business strategies, plans and processes and have made the long-term commitment to update our practices, where possible, in light of advances in technology and best practice.
To evidence this commitment, in 2013, the Mayo Hardware relocated our main offices and warehouse to a brand new, state of the art, purpose built facility at Moorebank, NSW. The new working environment has both a positive impact on our ecological footprint and will reduce our carbon footprint further. Some of the environmental and energy saving features of our new office include:
- Rainwater harvesting to flush toilets – saving precious water.
- Using the latest energy efficient lighting technology in the warehouse.
- Warehouse use of natural light, no lighting required most days.
- Warehouse lighting shuts down based on activity in an area.
- Office lighting around windows shuts down with increased natural lighting.
- External and grounds lighting is switched on and off via light level sensors.
- Air conditioning operations is controlled through a series of timers and sensors.
The Mayo Hardware is a signatory to the voluntary National Packaging Covenant, which aims to minimise the environmental impacts arising from the disposal of used packaging, conserve resources through better design and production processes and facilitate the re-use and recycling of used packaging materials.
The Mayo Hardware as an active environmental committee, which meets regularly to discuss progress and initiatives, and has the full support of senior management. The purpose of the committee is two-fold:
- To ensure the company operates in a manner that is consistent with reducing the impact of its current and future operations on the environment.
- To increase awareness and encourage behaviours by our employees, associates and business partners to reduce the harmful impact of our actions on the environment and encourage positive action.
Some examples of initiatives the Mayo Environmental Committee have implemented to date include:
Energy Saving
- Measurement of our current energy usage as a benchmark to evaluate improvements against;
- GreenPower certified renewable electricity powering all our offices;
- Increased energy efficiency through measures such as changing over to energy saving light-globes and adjusting equipment settings, timed lighting in bathrooms and restricted air-conditioning hours.
Water Saving
- Survey of water usage in the offices and education around wastage reduction behaviours
Resource Saving
- Re-use of resources such as used paper, stationery etc
- Switching to 100% recycled paper products
- Recycling of excess paper and other recyclable products, including e-waste and printer cartridges, in all offices
- Implementation of technological improvements to move towards paperless office communication
Education of Staff and Associates
- Employee awareness campaigns and reminders encompassing both work and personal choices to encourage more environmentally sustainable behaviours
- Encouragement of participation in initiatives such as “National Ride to Work Day” to reduce travel emissions

- Through communication and training, our employees, associates and business partners are encouraged and assisted to enhance their awareness of the impact that each and every one of us has upon the fragile environment in which we co-exist.
